During this lecture, Alf will focus on the political ecology of the money-energy-technology complex, its links to neocolonialism and structural barriers to development in the Anthropocene. On the other hand, Hornborg misses a range of issues that provide a much more balanced picture of what resilience is intended – and not intended – to do. Here are four quick points: 1. We know it. Yes Alf, “power” – however we choose to define it – has been problematic to integrate within the framework of social-ecological systems.

Like “intersectionality” (Crenshaw 1991), the “Anthropocene” is one of those rare terms that has crossed over from rather niche corners of academia into the cultural mainstream. Indeed, after it was first popularised by Nobel Prize-winning Dutch chemist Paul Crutzen (2002: 23), it enjoyed a “truly meteoric career”, as Andreas Malm and Alf Hornborg note (2014). Personal email communications from both Jason Moore and Alf Hornborg in late 2014 told me Malm proposed the term Capitalocene in a seminar in Lund, Sweden, in 2009, when he was still a graduate student. I first used the term independently in public lectures starting in 2012. The Anthropocene is a fraught concept that takes the environmental damage done by a few and applies it to the anthropos, or all of humanity (Chakrabarty, Malm and Hornborg, Harraway). My first encounter with the Anthropocene was in Crutzen’s foundational article “ Geology of Mankind ” (2002), alongside Chakrabarty’s, Haraway’s, and Malm and Hornborg’s criticisms of Crutzen’s work.
